Luke 2:7
God has intervened in the course of human history and has acted in the most revolutionary manner. This is what the message of the Incarnation teaches us, ever so powerfully. As He became flesh, He also intentionally exalted the lowly, the downtrodden and the forgotten. It remains a fact that He came not only to save the rich and the famous, but thank God Christmas reminds us constantly that He came to call us sinners to salvation and repentance.
It is always intriguing to note the characters and things chosen to be instruments in the great Incarnation drama. He used a little peasant girl by the name of Mary – peasant but pious (Luke 1:28). He used a lowly carpenter by the name of Joseph, but a just and devout man (Matthew 1:19). He used old Simeon, one who was also just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel (Luke 2:25). He used old prophetess Anna, who served God night and day in the Temple with fastings and prayers (Luke 2:37). He used the Wisemen from the east, eager to worship Him (Matthew 2:2). He used the lowly shepherds, keeping watch over their flock by night (Luke 2:8-13). He used a manger – a donkey stable or animal shelter (Luke 2:7).
Therefore, as we reflect on this glorious truth of the Incarnation, it becomes crystal clear that God especially chooses to use the ordinary, the simple, the unexpected and the unusual to bring His purposes to pass. As long as you make yourselves available, He can and will use you.
So many of us would have despised the manger. How many would have chosen some high-class socialite to be the mother of the Messiah. We would have chosen among the nobility to be Jesus’ earthly father, but God acted completely in the reverse. The fact is, if God had continued to operate in the pattern of this world, you and I certainly would not have been chosen. The likes of you and me could never have been chosen to be instruments of divine favor, recipients of his grace and carriers of this glorious message. Thank God He has come in defiance of this evil corrupt world system based on fame, fortune, good looks and class. Thank God for Christmas – the coming of the Christ-child into our lives and world!
In Him, exemplified in the Incarnation we have a complete reversal of the natural order of things. In Him, poor people have a chance of exaltation, prosperity and deliverance. In Him, the underprivileged and dispossessed are recognized and empowered. In Him, we see the restoration of all things. Justice is again enthroned – truth is reestablished and real light shines through again. “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us…” (John 1:14). Thank God for Christmas! He came, took upon himself our humanity and dwelt among us, enrobed in human flesh – Incarnate deity.
From the Greenaway’s household to all the brethren, saints, family and friends across the Northeast and beyond – Merriest of Christmases! May you have the most joyous and peaceful Christmas ever! Let us continually, joyfully adore Him! May we also deliberately remember the less fortunate and the victims of recent tornadoes and other disasters around this time. As we have been blessed, we give back! Merry Christmas one and all! Thank God for Christmas!
